Tristan Carter is an Australian Canoe Slalom Athlete and Olympian who is representing Australia at the upcoming Paris Olympic 2024 Games alongside Timothy Anderson.
Tristan Carter Qualified For the 2024 Paris Olympics
The Australian Olympic Committee has chosen Tim Anderson and Tristan Carter for the Australian Olympic Team going to the 2024 Paris Olympics. Anderson will compete in the men’s K1 event, and Carter will compete in the men’s C1 event.
The announcement was made today at the Penrith Whitewater Stadium, where Anderson and Carter train and take part in competitions. Anderson is 29 years old, and Carter is 25 years old. This will be the first Olympic Games for both of them. Anna Meares, the Chef de Mission for the 2024 Australian Olympic Team, congratulated Tim and Tristan on being selected.
“My first visit to the Penrith Whitewater Stadium (the location for the 2000 Canoe Slalom Olympic event) made me realize how far I could go in this sport.”
Carter says,
“It’s amazing to be chosen for the 2024 Paris Olympics. I have worked extremely hard for more than a decade to achieve this. It’s really exciting to see all that hard work paying off.”
Anderson said.
In an interview with the ICF’s Path to Paris Podcast, Anderson mentioned, “The week leading up to the selection was very stressful.”
Tristan Carter’s Early Life
Australian Olympic athlete Tristan Carter was born on February 17, 1998, and grew up in Melbourne, Victoria.
As a child, Carter describes himself as being ‘restless’ and always wanted to try new sports. However, when he was a teenager, he became interested in the slalom canoe event, and from that point on, he never looked back or changed his focus.
In his efforts to compete for Australia at the Olympic Games, Carter left his family and friends behind in Melbourne and moved to Penrith. On Tuesday, his dream from childhood finally came true when it was confirmed that he would race in the C1 canoe event at the Paris Olympics.

Beginning of Carter’s journey
In the summer of 2006, Carter developed a strong passion for the elegant sport of canoe slalom.
His first visit to the Penrith Whitewater Stadium in New South Wales (the location for the 2000 Canoe Slalom Olympic event) in 2014 opened his eyes to how far he could go in this sport. The Melbourne-born athlete Tristan Carter initially got involved in canoe slalom by following the path of his older sister Chelsea.
That first trip to Penrith in 2014, when he was 15 years old, led to him qualifying for his first Junior World Championships. As he spent more time training at Paddle Australia’s main hub in Penrith, his skills and opportunities started taking off. He went on to be selected for two more Junior World Championship teams, three U23 World Championship teams, and four Senior World Championship teams, representing Australia at the highest level. His studies and job are in the security field.
Tristan Carter’s Passion Meets His Career
When Tristan Carter was 16 years old in 2014, he competed at his first Junior and U23 Canoe Slalom World Championships held in Penrith. In 2015, he traveled overseas to Brazil for the Junior and U23 World Championships. Later that same year, he made his senior-level debut at World Cup 3 in Liptovsky, Slovakia.
Now 25 years old, Carter has been paddling for many years against the best athletes from around the world at the biggest competitions. One week before he qualified for his first Olympics, he thought he had missed his chance.

Leading up to the Tokyo Olympics, the same thing happened, he came very close to qualifying but did not make it. Paddle Australia’s Paddle Pathways YouTube channel has posted videos featuring Tristan Carter. In 2017, he became a regular member of the senior national team, competing at all five World Cup events that year and making his senior World Championships debut.
As a C1 specialist athlete with the Victorian Institute of Sport, Carter’s best World Cup result this year was a close fourth-place finish in the MC1 event at the Ljubljana-Tacen World Cup in Slovenia in June. With less than six months until the Olympic Games, Carter and teammate Tim Anderson will intensify their preparations with coaches Julien and Kilian.
