Australian Sailor Breiana Whitehead qualified for the Paris Olympics 2024

Breiana Whitehead, 22, a well-known Australian sailor began her sailing career at the age of eight and is currently eligible for the pairs Olympics. She was also the first Australian sailor chosen for the 2024 Olympic Team in Paris.

Breiana Whitehead from Townsville has made history by becoming the first kite foil sailor to be chosen for the Australian Olympic Team. The 23-year-old athlete’s selection was announced by the Chef de Mission for the Australian Olympic Team, Anna Meares, in Sydney.

At the 2022 Formula Kite World Championships in Cagliari, Italy, Breiana Whitehead had a remarkable day. With two days of racing left, she moved up to the fourth position.

“My main goal for the summer is to perform well in the finals format and handle the pressure and intensity that comes with the new finals structure. I am really thrilled for the world to witness the excitement of Kite Foil Racing.”

Breiana Whitehead was born on February 3, 2002, in Townsville, Queensland, Australia. She trains alongside her brother Scott Whitehead and is eagerly awaiting a significant period in the Southern Hemisphere. Her schedule includes competing in both the Australian and New Zealand National Championships.

Breiana and her brother Scott have won titles at the Australian and International levels. Both siblings are formidable competitors in the extreme sport of kite-foiling.

“We have lived in Townsville for 25 years, and both Breiana and Scott grew up there, involved in sailing from a young age. When Briana was around two-and-a-half years old, I built a 45-foot Adams/Radford yacht. As a family, we cruised the Great Barrier Reef, the islands, including Papua New Guinea.”

Her father, Murray Whitehead, shared

“Both children have immense on-water experience, starting with sailing small dinghies, then racing Sabots, Flying 11s, 29ers, and lasers at the Australian level – giving them a solid background.”

Breiana Whitehead began kite sailing just eight years ago. She tried various classes before settling on the new kite foil class. Now, she is set to represent her country, Australia, at the Olympic Games in Paris. Originally from Townsville, Queensland, she joined the Townsville Yacht Club as her home club.

Breiana has made her mark as one of the newest members of the Australian Sailing Team, following an impressive international season in 2022. She secured sixth place at the European Championships in October and an impressive seventh place at the World Championships in Italy.

Briana started competing internationally in 2018 with a bronze medal at the 2019 World Championships and a fourth-place finish at the World Beach Games.

Breiana completed her academics at the Queensland Academy of Sport. Since 2023, she has been a part of the Australian Sailing Team. Additionally, Breiana is a qualified Mechanical Engineer and has been involved in every step of the board design process, including shaping, cutting, using the router, modifying CAD drawings, and testing the boards. For Breiana, the board and its design are crucial for racing well.

Breiana secured a quota place for the Paris Olympics 2024 Games after finishing eleventh in the Sailing World Championships held in The Hague, Netherlands, in August of this year.

On Tuesday, November 21, 2023, Breiana Whitehead made history by becoming the first-ever kite foil sailor to be chosen for the Australian Olympic Team.

At a recent event, Whitehead posted impressive scores of second, third, fourth, and fifth place, pushing her from tenth position overnight to fourth place overall.

Throughout her extraordinary sailing career, Breiana Whitehead has accomplished significant achievements. In the 2023 Kitefoil World Series held in Cagliari, Italy, she secured the silver medal, showcasing her exceptional skills.

These accomplishments highlight Breiana Whitehead’s remarkable dedication and ability in the sport of kite foil sailing.
