Basketball player Canyon Barry will captain and represent the United States in the upcoming 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. He is Rick Barry’s son, the Basketball Hall of Famer. In the national teams, he is a guard. His most recent NBA G League team was the Iowa Wolves. Since he was nine years old, he has been involved in basketball.
Canyon Barry to Represent USA in 2024 Olympics
Canyon Barry will represent the United States in the 2024 Paris Olympics. He will be part of the team along with Jimmer Fredette, Kareem Maddox, and Dylan Travis. Joe Lewandowski is the coach, and James Fraschilla is the assistant coach. This group of four players won the gold medal together at the 2022 FIBA 3×3 Men’s AmeriCup and the 2023 Pan American Games. They also secured the silver medal at the 2023 FIBA 3×3 World Cup.
While many players from the University of Florida have participated in international FIBA world and continental championships, Barry becomes the first UF men’s basketball alumnus to compete at the Olympic level. The men’s team qualified automatically as the No. 2 team in the world according to FIBA’s ranking system.

Canyon Barry was born on January 7, 1994. His parents are Lynn Norenberg Barry and Rick Barry, who is inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. From his childhood, watching his father’s basketball skills, he became attracted to the sport. His father has been his trainer since he was a kid, helping him master and improve his basketball abilities.
Rick Barry is among the most prolific scorers and all-around players in basketball history. He is the only one to lead the NCAA, ABA, and NBA in points per game in a season. He ranks as the all-time ABA scoring leader in both regular season (30.5 points per game) and postseason (33.5) play. His 36.3 points per game are the highest in NBA Finals history. Barry was also the only player to score at least 50 points in Game 7 of the playoffs in either league until Stephen Curry and Jayson Tatum achieved that in 2023. He is one of only four players to be part of a championship team in both the ABA and NBA.
Canyon Barry’s mother, Lynn Barry, was a standout athlete at William & Mary. She served as an assistant at Kentucky from 1981-83 under head coach Terry Hall and spent 11 years as the assistant executive director of USA Basketball. After the women’s national team won gold at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, Lynn Barry became a special advisor to the WNBA.
Barry has three brothers: Scooter Barry, Brent Barry, and Drew Barry, all of whom are also basketball players. He graduated from the College of Charleston Honors College with a bachelor’s degree in physics. On May 9, 2016, he announced his transfer to the University of Florida as an immediately eligible graduate transfer studying nuclear engineering.

Frances Peyton is originally from Great Falls, Virginia, and she is pursuing sunshine and warmer weather. She was part of the 2016 meteorology class at Virginia Tech and played on the women’s varsity tennis team for all four years.
Frances has forecasted the weather across different regions of Virginia, including the southwestern corner, the Shenandoah Valley, central Virginia, and finally, coastal Virginia. She is excited to forecast the extreme weather conditions in South Florida and experience her first true hurricane season.
Frances is an avid runner who has completed five marathons. She qualified for the Boston Marathon with a time of 3 hours and 20 minutes at the New York Marathon. Additionally, while training for the New York Marathon, she achieved her goal of raising $7,500 for Pancreatic Cancer Research at Memorial Sloan Kettering in honor of her late uncle.
Canyon Started playing Basketball at a very early age
He began playing basketball at a very young age with his brothers Scott and Brent, under the watchful eye of his father Rick Barry, who was a legendary basketball player.
In his college years, he was among the best basketball players, living up to the legacy of his father. He played college basketball for three years at the College of Charleston in Charleston, South Carolina, as well as one year at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida. While a redshirt junior at the College of Charleston, he averaged a team-high 19.7 points per game.

Following that season, he became notable for his free-throw shooting, as he shot “granny style,” a method his father made popular during his career. As a senior, Barry had a .883 free throw percentage. He set a Florida Gators men’s basketball school record for consecutive free throws, breaking Taurean Green’s streak of 37 on February 11, 2017. His streak ended at 42 on February 14, on a night when he posted a season-high 30 points against Auburn. In 2017, he earned recognition as the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Academic All-American of the Year.
Barry’s Professional Career and Representing the US
Barry, now 30 years old, began his college career at the College of Charleston and transferred to Florida for his final season of eligibility in 2016-17. He helped the Gators reach the Elite Eight in 2017, averaging 11.3 points per game. The Colorado native set a school record with 42 consecutive free throws, surpassing South Florida native and current Gators assistant Taurean Green, in 2017.
He started playing 3-on-3 basketball in 2019. While still in the G-League, he was selected to the Men’s U.S. World Cup Team. That same team won the gold medal during the 2019 FIBA 3×3 Basketball World Cup. Since that 2019 team, which already included Barry and Maddox, team USA added Fredette and Travis.
With the addition of those players, they have gone on to win the 2022 FIBA 3×3 AmeriCup and the 2023 Pan American Games. The team heading to Paris this year also won a silver medal during the 2023 FIBA 3×3 Basketball World Cup.
