Delicious Orie, 26, is a British amateur boxer who competed for England and won gold in the 2022 Commonwealth Games and bronze at the 2022 European Championships. He weights more than 92 kg and is 6 feet 6 inches tall. Great boxer from the United Kingdom is now qualified for the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

Delicious Orie Qualify for the Paris Olympics 2024

British amateur boxer Delicious Orie has qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympics, securing his place along with fellow Team GB fighters Rosie Eccles and Charley Davison after strong showings at the 2023 European Games in Poland.

An emotional Orie expressed his lifelong desire to compete at the Olympics after defeating Azerbaijan’s Mahammed Abdullayev to claim the super-heavyweight gold medal in dramatic fashion in the final bout of the European Games.

“It’s a dream I’ve always had and now I’ve got it. Every single day I wake up I tell myself I’m going to be an Olympian and today is the day.

Orie stated.

Orie’s gold medal effort capped a successful European Games for the British boxing team, returning home with four medals total and three Paris Olympic qualifications.

Delicious Orie’s Early Life and Family

Delicious Orie was born on May 31, 1997, in Moscow, Russia to a Nigerian father, Justin Orie, and a Russian mother, Natalie Orie. He revealed in a BBC interview that his unique name was inspired by American R&B singer Delious Kennedy. Orie also has a sister named Vanessa.

When Orie was 7 years old, he moved with his family from Russia to England, settling in Wolverhampton a few years later.

He attended Colton Hills Community School where his first passion was playing basketball competitively. He later transitioned to boxing in college and university.

He started amateur boxing during his university years, while studying at Aston. He recalls this as a definitive period in his life:

“I thought Aston University was brilliant and I enjoyed every single year. The people were great. I got to meet different people from all over the world with different goals and aspirations. It was definitely one of the best experiences of my life.”

Delicious Orie has been in a long term relationship with girlfriend Sophie Jayne, he always wish her well on her February 7th birthday each year.

Originally from Worcester, Worcestershire, Sophie Jayne was born to parents Neil “George” Anson and Julie Anson.

Jayne also has a brother, Dan Mannion, who got married on July 1, 2023 to his wife Chloe-anne Mannion. Orie appears to have formed a close bond with Sophie and her family over the course of their relationship.

Delicious Orie Early Career

Orie initially set his sights on earning a basketball scholarship to the United States. However, eligibility issues surrounding his citizenship status proved an insurmountable obstacle, causing his college basketball aspirations to fade away.

Orie turned to boxing in 2016 after finding inspiration watching British star Anthony Joshua compete. Orie closely identified with Joshua’s Nigerian roots and quickly developed a passion for the sweet science.

In the early stages of his amateur career, Orie trained out of the Henrietta Street Gym and also worked with Joshua directly. His talent was later nurtured under coach Mick Maguire at the Jewellery Quarter Boxing Club in Birmingham.

Orie simultaneously pursued academic interests, studying Economics and Management.

Orie credits Joshua as a motivating figure throughout his development, constantly striving to achieve what his idol had accomplished. By 2023, Delicious Orie etched his name alongside Joshua as one of Britain’s prized pugilistic prospects.

Delicious Orie Professional Career

The 2022 year proved monumental for Orie’s career, capturing gold at the Commonwealth Games while also earning a bronze medal at the prestigious European Championships.

“I want to go as far as I can in the amateurs, which means completing the Olympic Games, winning a medal and accumulating rounds against all the best boxers in the world.”

Orie firmly set his targets on qualifying for the 2024 Paris Olympics and making a run at gold on that global stage.

Orie was deservedly named the Best Amateur Boxer of the Year for 2023 at the annual Boxing Writers Club dinner held in London.

Delicious Orie credits fellow British boxer Anthony Joshua for inspiring him to compete in the sport from the very beginning:

“I’ve told Anthony Joshua himself after one of our last sparring sessions, ‘Look, if it wasn’t for you, I wouldn’t even be competing,”

Orie explained.

Seeing Joshua and compatriots like Joyce, Frazer and Audley Harrison achieving world-class success motivated the late-starting Orie tremendously when he first laced up the gloves at 18 years old.

“I hope I’ll be doing the same thing, passing on the torch to the next person in a couple of years.”
