Olivia’s father, Calvin Coffey, was a well-known rower, By the time of the 1976 Olympics, he had a lot of experience competing internationally. He won a bronze medal in the coxless pairs at the 1971 Pan-American Games and was part of the U.S. team at the 1973 and 1975 World Championships. In 1973, while at Northeastern, he was part of the eight that won the Eastern Sprints. At the 1976 Montreal Olympics, he paired with Michael Staines, with only the East Germans able to beat them.

In high school, she played soccer, and basketball, and was the captain of the hockey team. She was also part of a crew that finished second at the Women’s Henley Regatta during her senior year.
Olivia attended the Junior National Selection Camp for rowing in 2006. She also played ice hockey for six years, winning five state titles and finishing third nationally twice.
Her father, Calvin Coffey, was an Olympic silver medalist in the 1976 Montreal Games in the men’s rowing pair.
She won silver in the eight at the 2009 World Rowing Under 23 Championships, and gold in the eight the following year. In 2013, she won gold in the four for the US at the World Rowing Championships. She continued her success, winning gold in the eight and four at the 2015 World Rowing Cup II, and gold in the quadruple sculls at the 2015 World Rowing Championships.
