In the earlier challenge tournament, Jacobson started with a 4-0 win over Richard Carlson in the quarterfinals. He then defeated Zac Braunagel 6-0 in the next round. The final match of the challenge tournament was a close 1-1 score, but Jacobson won against John Stefanowicz to advance.
In the championship final against Spencer Woods, Jacobson took the first round 8-2. However, Woods won the second round 5-2, forcing a decisive third round to determine the champion. Jacobson fought hard and earned a 3-1 victory in the third round, claiming the overall championship.
After qualifying for the Olympics, Jacobson shared a concern voiced on YouTube Shorts by @Fivepointmove: “In other countries, wrestlers sometimes win cadet medals but don’t fully develop until ages 18 or 19. This creates a big gap because they solely focus on Greco-Roman wrestling, while we split time between styles.”

In 2021-2022, Jacobson was the first-place winner at the U20 World Team Trials. He placed third at the U23 World Team Trials and was named to the USAW National Team. Jacobson also took third place at the World Team Trials Challenge Tournament. He received the Team Newcomer Award.
In 2023, Payton Jacobson earned a spot on the U23 World Team, showing his wrestling skills. He had success by winning the Bill Farrell Memorial International event.
