Saskia Tidey Qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympics
The first athletes chosen to compete at the 2024 Paris Olympics for Great Britain’s team have been announced. The British Sailing organization selected Freya Black and Saskia Tidey to take part in the 49erFX sailing event.
Saskia Tidey and Freya Black gave a strong performance at the recent Olympic Sailing test competition. They finished seventh overall in the women’s 49erFX class at the Olympic Test Event in Marseille, but Tidey remains hopeful about winning a medal in Paris.
“It is an honour to be selected for my third Olympic Games,”
“I have had a lot of fun sailing with Freya and building a team worthy of challenging a medal in Paris.”

Saskia Tidey believes her fighting performance at the recent Olympic Sailing test event is the key to her third successive Olympic appearance. The 30-year-old finished seventh in the women’s 49erFX class alongside sailing partner Freya Black at the Olympic Test Event in Marseille. The duo has been sailing together for just 18 months. After they showed their attacking mindset during the final medal race in Marseille, Tidey is sure that they will be the ones to watch as they aim for the Paris 2024 qualification.
“We’re quite thrilled,”
“To have made it into the medal race after a perfect day on the water before and then finishing seventh overall is great”
she said after the pair finished fourth in the medal race
Saskia Tidey Early Years in Dublin
Saskia Tidey was born on June 11, 1993, in Dublin, Ireland. From a young age, she shared an incredibly close bond with her parents, Don and Barbara Tidey, who have played vital roles in shaping her life and career.
Don Tidey, Saskia’s father, went through a terrible experience when he was kidnapped by the Irish Republican Army (IRA) in 1983 while working as a businessman in Ireland. For more than three very difficult weeks, he was held prisoner by the armed group. After those long weeks, security forces were able to rescue Don Tidey and free him from the IRA militants who had captured him. Saskia’s mother Barbara spent her time making detailed pieces from felt and doing embroidery work.
Even as her sailing career has taken her around the globe, Saskia frequently shares photographs of her loved ones on social media, cherishing the unbreakable bonds that tie them together. Her heartfelt words on Father’s Day summarize the depth of her affection:
Happy Fathers Day to the most inspirational and loving dad I could wish for…Thank you for helping me keep believing in my dreams and reminding me to enjoy every step along the journey! No words describe how proud I am to be your Daughter
